Antoine Nguyên Van Thien

Antoine Nguyên Van Thien (born March 13, 1906 in Cai Côn, Cần Thơ province , Vietnam ; † May 13, 2012 in Nice ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Vĩnh Long in Vietnam. His name combines western naming tradition ( Antoine as first name before the family name Nguyên ) with Vietnamese ( Van Thien as a personal name is behind the family name).

Life

Nguyên Van Thien entered the seminary in Phnom Penh in 1923 . He was ordained a priest on February 20, 1932. He was a professor at the Banam Theological Faculty.

In 1960 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. appointed Bishop of Vĩnh Long . The episcopal ordination donated him on 22 January 1961 in the Basilica of Our Lady in Saigon Archbishop Pierre Martin Ngo-Dinh-Thuc . He was the council father of all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

After the Tet offensive in the Vietnam War, he resigned from office due to a serious eye injury. With his resignation on July 12, 1968, he was replaced by Pope Paul VI. Appointed titular bishop of Hispellum , the former Italian diocese of Spello. From 1975 he lived in France, from 1985 in Nice in the south of France.

Bishop Nguyên Van Thien has been the oldest living bishop of the Roman Catholic Church since the death of Ettore Cunial on October 6, 2005 . He experienced a total of nine popes.
