Jacques Nguyên Van Mâu

Jacques Nguyên Van Mâu (born January 22, 1914 in Bà Ria , Bà Rịa-Vũng Tau Province , Vietnam ; † January 31, 2013 ) was a Roman Catholic bishop of the Vietnamese diocese of Vĩnh Long . His name combines western naming tradition ( Jacques as first name before the family name Nguyên ) with Vietnamese ( Van Mâu as a personal name is behind the family name).

Life

Jacques Nguyên Van Mâu entered the Saigon Minor Seminary at the age of 12. He was ordained a priest on September 21, 1940 . He was active in pastoral care in Bến Gỗ (1940/43) and Cái Thìa (1943/46) in the Apostolic Vicariate of Saigon . From 1946 to 1949 he was vicar in Côn Đảo , an isolated group of islands in the South China Sea , south of mainland Vietnam . From 1948 to 1955 he worked in the dioceses of Họ Bảo Lộc , Ðơn Dương , Ðà Lạt and Vũng Tau . From 1955 to 1960 he was professor at the Seminary of Joseph of Nazareth (Thánh Giuse). After a vicariate for the poor, he was rector of the seminary in Saigon from 1960 to 1968 .

In 1968 Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Vĩnh Long. The episcopal ordination on 12 September 1968 in the Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon gave him Archbishop Angelo Palmas , former apostolic delegate in Vietnam; Co- consecrators were Paul Nguyên Van Binh , Archbishop of Saigon , and his predecessor Antoine Nguyên Van Thien . His episcopal motto was Amor et Labor .

In 2001, his age-related resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II ; he was succeeded by Thomas Nguyên Van Tan .
