Antonin Smital

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antonín Smital or Anton Smital (* 1863 in Palonín / Pollein, † 1897 in Vienna ) was a Czech-German writer and translator.

Among other things, Smital wrote small sketches in the Arbeiter-Zeitung under the pseudonym Oblomow , which, according to Stefan Großmann's testimony, inspired Alfred Polgar and Peter Altenberg , among others . Altenberg even dreamed for a time of publishing a book alternating between his own and Smital's sketches. After Smital's early death, however, it was largely forgotten (Goßmann cites it as an example for his thesis “fame is chance” and it is “foolish to believe that every talent finds the promotion it deserves”).
