The Anton Island is a shallow and ice-covered island before Clarie Coast of the East Antarctic Wilke country . It is located 8 km north-northeast of Lewis Island just outside the east side of the entrance to Davis Bay .
It was discovered in 1956 by a team led by the Australian polar explorer Phillip Law as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . The first landing followed on January 18, 1960 by helicopter . The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) named the island after Anton Moyell, first officer on the Australian research vessel Magga Dan in 1960.
