Macropinosome

A macropinosome is a cell organelle that is temporarily formed in eukaryotes during macropinocytosis .

Macropinosomes are liquid-filled vesicles that are invaded by the cell membrane during macropinocytosis (a form of endocytosis ) .

An apoptosis- independent form of cell death with excessive formation of macropinosomes is called methuosis .

The Ebola virus , vaccinia virus , adenovirus , some picornaviruses and human herpesvirus 8 use Makropinosom-like vesicles for cell entry. The Shiga toxin , Salmonella and Legionella pneumophila as well as some protozoa formed by EHEC are taken up into cells via macropinosomes.
