Anton Sebastiaan Maria Cloppenburg (born May 6, 1886 in Rotterdam ; † March 15, 1967 in Wassenaar ) was a Dutch-German textile merchant and founder of Peek & Cloppenburg (Hamburg) .

origin

His German father, Heinrich Anton Adolph Cloppenburg (1844–1922), who came from Altenoythe , moved to the Netherlands around 1867 and founded a clothing store Peek & Cloppenburg together with Johann Theodor Peek (1845–1907) in 1869 . The family were so-called Tödden . The male members first sold textiles on the streets in Holland (like the Brenninkmeijer family from C&A ). Anton was the youngest of seven siblings, his mother Willemina Maria, geb. Williams Phillips (1850–1887) died when Anton was a baby. In the following year his father married again, his stepmother became Johanna Antonia, geb. Zwijsen (1851-1928).

Entrepreneur

In 1911, he and his brother-in-law Paul Schröder founded the company Peek & Cloppenburg (Hamburg) as a business partner , which opened a men's textile department store in Hamburg in 1912. The name "Peek & Cloppenburg" was identical to that of the parents' company Peek & Cloppenburg (Düsseldorf) , which was now run by his brother James Cloppenburg (1877–1926). Since then there have been two companies with this name. In 1928 the two companies jointly founded the men's clothing factory Beha GmbH , which existed until 1945. In 1937, the previously exclusive men's range was expanded to include departments for women's and girls' clothing.

Anton Cloppenburg's son Fritz HM Cloppenburg (1914–2003) took over the management as a personally liable partner from 1939. His grandson James Cloppenburg was a managing partner from the end of the 1970s, and since 2015 he has retired from the management.
