James Joseph Anton Cloppenburg (born October 2, 1877 in Rotterdam ; † February 10, 1926 ) was a German entrepreneur.

His father, Heinrich Anton Adolph Cloppenburg (1844–1922), who came from Altenoythe , moved to the Netherlands around 1867 . Together with Johann Theodor Peek (1845–1907), who came from Grönheim , he founded a clothing store Peek & Cloppenburg in 1869 . The family were so-called Tödden . The male members first sold textiles on the streets in Holland (like the Brenninkmeijer family from C&A ). His mother was Willemina Maria, b. Williams Phillips (1850-1887).

In 1901 James Cloppenburg opened his own clothing store in Berlin on Gertraudenstrasse and Roßstrasse without the peeks, and revolutionized the market with uniform sizes . Later he brought this house into his father's company, which had established its German branch in Düsseldorf in 1901, and took over the management of the entire company. This is how Peek & Cloppenburg (Düsseldorf) came about . His brother Anton Cloppenburg (1886–1967) founded a clothing store of the same name in Hamburg in 1912, which developed into its own company.

James Cloppenburg died in 1926 and was buried in the old cathedral cemetery of St. Hedwig's parish in Berlin.

The business was run by his son James Cloppenburg Jr. (* 1902, † 1986), after his death by his son Harro Uwe Cloppenburg (* 1940).

A third James Cloppenburg is the son of Fritz Cloppenburg (1914-2003), whose father was the aforementioned brother Anton (1886-1967). From the late 1970s to around 2015 he was managing partner of the Hamburg company . With his fortune of around 350 million euros (as of 2013), he was 317th on the list of the richest Germans .

The Cloppenburg family lives very withdrawn and eschews the public.
