origin

Johann Theodor Peek was born in Grönheim as the youngest of eight siblings to his parents Jan Wilhelm Peek (* 1796, † 1859) and Maria Elisabeth Peek († 1884). The marriage resulted in 8 children. His eldest brother Gerd Wilm Peek (* 1826) took over his parents' farm and pub, and his descendants still run it today as the Peek restaurant .

Entrepreneurs in the Netherlands

Johann Theodor Peek, on the other hand, left his parents' farm and met Heinrich Cloppenburg (1844–1922) , who came from nearby, in 1866 or 1867 . By 1868 at the latest, both were working as apprentices in Dutch manufactory stores in Zwolle and Rotterdam and had a tough apprenticeship, not shy of visiting their customers in the surrounding villages.

In 1869, the two men founded a Dutch textile business called “Peek & Cloppenburg” in Rotterdam. The beginning was small and modest, but rested on a secure financial basis, with the help of which they overcame the first difficulties of the start-up. For further development, the young entrepreneurs were able to fall back on relatives and friends, some of whom brought them from their Oldenburg homeland and some of whom they met in the Netherlands. Barely 20 years after the trading house was founded in Rotterdam, there were already branches in Amsterdam , The Hague , Breda , Leeuwarden , Groningen , Haarlem , Leiden and Utrecht .

Entrepreneurs in Germany

In 1900 they founded their own company in Germany, also called “Peek & Cloppenburg”, and in 1901 opened their first branch in Düsseldorf .

The eldest son of Heinrich Cloppenburg was James Cloppenburg . In the same year, 1901, he founded a shop in Berlin . This was merged with the father's company in 1911 at the latest, from which Peek & Cloppenburg (Düsseldorf) developed .

Johann Theodor Peek died in 1907. He never saw the founding of the other company named after him, Peek & Cloppenburg (Hamburg) in 1911.
