The ship was launched in 1954 and, at the suggestion of the then Federal President Theodor Heuss, was named after the zoologist and evolutionary biologist Anton Dohrn and christened by his granddaughter. The ship was put into service by Federal President Heuss on March 3, 1955 and served as a fishery research ship until July 1972. It was 62.30 m long and 10.20 m wide, had a draft of 4.42 m and was measured at 999 GRT. An oil-fired 850 PSe steam piston engine with an exhaust turbine, which was built in 1942 but has not yet been used, gave the ship a top speed of 12 knots . The crew consisted of 30 men; in addition, up to 15 scientists were on board.
