Life

After finishing school, Anton Hofer learned to be an aircraft manufacturer and became a pilot during the Second World War . After the war and Soviet imprisonment, he switched to the oil industry due to a lack of pilot requirements and became a  technical draftsman and explosive person in the Soviet mineral oil administration - today's OMV AG . Due to his commitment to improvement and safety in the factories, he was appointed head of plant security.

During this time he also discovered his great passion for volleyball. Numerous appearances in the Austrian volleyball team in the 1950s underline his commitment and skill.

In 1955 he switched from the oil industry to politics and has since devoted himself to social policy in Austria. His studies of philosophy and history also fall into this epoch .

In 1964 he was elected to the Chamber of Labor , where he served as a chamber councilor for several decades. He became federal chairman of the trade union unity (GE), from which the trade union left bloc (GLB) emerged in 1974 , and held this position for almost 20 years until 1989.

Between 1971 and 1989 he was a member of the ÖGB federal executive board. His involvement in trade union work took him far beyond the country's borders and brought him to the General Council of the World Trade Union Confederation (WGB) from 1970 to 1990 .

Due to his heart disease, he resigned from all functions in 1990.

Anton Hofer was buried at the Oberlaa cemetery (group 18, number 158) in Vienna.
