Anton Huber (Swiss)

Anton Huber (born July 28, 1933 in Kottwil , canton Lucerne ; † December 22, 2015 in Capolago , canton Ticino ) was a Swiss emigrant to Brazil , one of the founders of Lucas do Rio Verde , member of the Coperlucas in Mato Grosso , president of Organization of the Mato Grosso Cooperatives and Vice President of the Cooperatives of Brazil.

Life

Anton Huber was the oldest of a small Swiss farmer from the canton of Lucerne. He attended the canton school. Since the Huber's sons saw their future as farmers, the father was forced to look for land. He found out about opportunities for farmers in the south of France, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Then they decided to join a group of Swiss on a settlement project in Honduras. But they did not get an entry visa. Faced with this hopelessness, thanks to a friend, his father sought contact with a Swiss fazenda owner in Brazil. In 1951 they started the journey towards Santos in Brazil. From Santos the family moved to Itapetininga , in the hinterland of São Paulo , on the fazenda of the Swiss owner. The fazenda was large, but not ideal. Because of this and because the father wanted to gain experience first, he leased a small farm with a dairy shop in the neighborhood. In this way they produced milk, which the sons sold by horse and cart in the city from door to door. After three years they bought a piece of the fazenda where they were initially. At marriageable age and dissatisfied with the insufficient fertility of the soil, Anton started looking for a new piece of land. He came across Holambra , a Dutch colony that had been founded on the former Fazenda Ribeirão and spread towards Campinas . Today it is a city with over 10,000 inhabitants and the largest production center for flowers and ornamental plants in Latin America.

In 1965 Anton Huber moved with his wife to Paranapanema , in the state of São Paulo, where he joined the Holambra settlement cooperative ( Cooperativa de Colonização Holambra ) as an independent farmer . Here he devoted himself to the cooperative system, took an active part in concerns and cultural events of the community. He was naturalized in Brazil. As before in Itapetininga, he also founded a mixed choir here, which he conducted in his free time and led for 25 years. When he had expanded his business considerably and experienced various crises as a result of inflation, he faced the risk of not being able to pay his interest in the event of a crop failure and of having to cede all his property to the banks. Because of this and because he was already shaped by the cooperative idea in Switzerland, he sold everything and joined a group of agro-entrepreneurs who were pursuing a cooperative project to colonize the state of Mato Grosso .

In 1981 he was elected President of the Coperlucas. In 1982 he took an active part in founding the city of Lucas do Rio Verde in the state of Mato Grosso. In 1989, the Mato Grosso cooperatives made him head of the organization of cooperatives (Ocemat) in the federal capital, Cuiabá , a role he held for 10 years. He mainly represented the areas of work and credit, both in the agricultural and urban areas, and above all the concept of cooperatives.

As a member of the State of Mato Grosso, he was elected Vice-President of the national umbrella organization OCB (Organização das Cooperativas Brasileiras) in Brasília.

Anton Huber directed a mixed choir for 25 years.

Together with two elected people, he managed the settlement project in Mato Grosso for several years, later also the Coperlucas cooperative, and was instrumental in founding the city of Lucas do Rio Verde, of which he was the first sub-prefect. From 1989 to 1999 he was head of the organization of the Mato Grosso cooperatives and vice-president of the national umbrella organization OCB (Organização de Cooperativas Brasileiras).

He published his memories of the structure of the settlement and later city of Lucas do Rio Verde in his publication: "Tempestade no Cerrado".
