Anton Mirou (* 1578 in Antwerp , Spanish Netherlands , today Belgium ; † before 1627 ) was a Flemish painter from the painting school in Frankenthal in the Electoral Palatinate.

resume

His father, the pharmacist Henricus Mirou, moved with his family to Frankenthal in 1586 as a persecuted Calvinist faith. Gillis van Coninxloo and Hendrick Gijsmans (also: Ghysmans) are suspected to be Mirous' teachers . Both are important representatives of the Frankenthal School of Painting, to which Pieter Schoubroeck and Hendrick van der Borcht also belonged.

In 1602 Anton Mirou and his wife Susanne married in Frankenthal; it was last mentioned in a document in 1627. Mirou's role models are Jan Brueghel and Theodor de Bry , in addition to Pieter Schoubroeck from Frankenthal . In art history, Mirou is rated as "hesitant to deal with change, sometimes almost a little old-fashioned".

Mirou's works can now be found in museums such as the Museo del Prado , the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam , the Szépművészeti Múzeum , the National Gallery in Prague , the Bavarian State Painting Collections and the Historical Museum of the Palatinate .

Works

Mirou painted landscapes in oil and made pen drawings. Diefenbacher's catalog contains 46 numbers. Many of his drawings were used as copperplate engravings. Here he worked with Hendrick van der Borcht (the elder), Theodor de Bry and Matthäus Merian .

His 'Schwalbacher Reise' is a series of 26 pen and ink drawings in landscape format of around 11.5 cm × 16.5 cm. Matthäus Merian took over nine of these motifs and added the remark: 'Drawn by Anton Mirou, but cut in copper by Matthäus Merian'. Thanks to Merian's printing technique, these stitches are reversed to the originals. Although Mirou left his Flemish homeland at the age of eight, he continued to write his factory notes in Dutch.

In the art market , up to $ 67,000 were paid for his oil paintings.

Trivia

Café Mirou, named after the painter, has stood on the town hall square in Frankenthal since 1977.
