Anton Nowacki

Anton Nowacki (born December 30, 1839 on the Samolenz estate near Wronke , Posen ; † August 29, 1925 in Zurich ) was a Swiss crop scientist .

Nowacki, the son of an estate manager, managed an estate himself for several years and studied natural sciences , economics and agriculture at the University of Halle since 1866 . He soon became particularly interested in the field of plant production . In 1870 he did his doctorate with Julius Kühn with a dissertation on the most appropriate time for grain to ripen .

From 1871 to 1907 Nowacki taught as a professor for arable and crop production at the Department of Agriculture at ETH Zurich . He represented the entire field of plant production theory and also gave lectures on soil science , fertilization and agricultural technology , as well as initially on the history of agriculture . He gained a high reputation in the professional world with his award-winning, eight-edition guide to grain cultivation on a scientific and practical basis . For several decades, this book was one of the best German-language works on the practice of growing grain . His books on grass clover cultivation and practical soil science have also been published several times .
