From 1851 to 1863 Anton Perko completed a career as a naval officer in the Austrian Navy . As a lieutenant in the line , he married in 1863, but was unable to raise the marriage deposit due to lack of assets . For this reason he resigned and joined the diplomat Count Felix von Wimpffen as secretary . Notwithstanding this, he learned oil and watercolor painting as a student of Joseph Selleny and Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager .

He took part in the naval battle of Lissa on July 20, 1866 as an official draftsman and war correspondent . As a result, he released the so-called "Lissa album", consisting of twelve scenes from the naval battle. In 1875 he accompanied Emperor Franz Joseph I on his trip to Dalmatia . Due to his merits and the high quality of his pictures, he was awarded the title of chamber marine painter . Until 1879 Perko remained in the service of Count von Wimpffen.

From 1879 to 1887, Perko was Crown Prince Rudolf's constant travel companion . After his death in 1889, he was assigned to the court of Rudolf's widow, Stephanie of Belgium , as court secretary and took part in various other trips in this capacity. The artist illustrated, among other things, the literary work Lacroma published by Stephanie in 1892 . Perko worked for a while on the Hradschin in Prague before retiring to Dubrovnik in 1896.

After Perko's death, the widowed Crown Princess expressed the wish to the family of the deceased to have all the pictures, sketches and drawings relating to her person from the estate.

Some of his works are in the Vienna Army History Museum , in the Joanneum in Graz and in the Albertina Graphic Collection in Vienna.
