Anton Pfitzer

Anton Pfitzer (born August 16, 1818 in Schrezheim near Ellwangen , † March 11, 1892 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) was a German Catholic clergyman and local researcher.

Life

Pfitzer studied theology and art history in Tübingen and was ordained a priest in 1844. From 1848 he worked in Schwäbisch Gmünd as a chaplain in the Franciscan Church and St. Leonhard . He was also pastor in the Gotteszell women's prison . In 1857 Pfitzer gave the impetus for the establishment of the local Catholic journeyman's association , today's Kolping Society . He was its president until 1860 . On May 16, 1876, Pfitzer was appointed Catholic parish priest. He has rendered special services to the restoration of the Gmünder churches (especially the minster and theJohanniskirche from 1869 to 1880).

In addition to his chairmanship in the journeyman's association, Pfitzer was President of the Pius Association and chairman of the Vincentius Association and the Association for Released Prisoners . He held other honorary positions, among others, in the commission for school building, in the board of trustees, local school board and the administrative board for the blind asylum.

Pfitzer's main local history work is a monograph published in 1888 on the Gmünder Johanniskirche. As a theologian, he mainly published a collection of sermons held in Schwäbisch Gmünd and a work on hospital pastoral care.

Because of his gout , Pfitzer was dependent on a wheelchair in the last years of his life. He was buried in the Leonhard cemetery in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

Honors

  • In 1890 Pfitzer was made an honorary citizen of Schwäbisch Gmünd.
  • The Pfitzerstraße in Schwäbisch Gmünd was named after him.
  • A plaque commemorates Anton Pfitzer in the second southern choir chapel of the Holy Cross Minster.
