Stephan Jakob Neher

Stephan Jakob Neher (born July 24, 1829 in Ebnat near Neuler , † October 7, 1902 in Nordhausen ) was a German Catholic theologian and church historian .

Life

After attending grammar school, Neher studied Catholic theology at the University of Tübingen . After successful completion, he was ordained a priest on August 10, 1855 . In 1867 he became pastor in Dorfmerkingen , in 1879 in Zöbingen and in 1896 in Nordhausen near Unterschneidheim .

Neher was the author of numerous theological and statistical works. From 1864 to 1868 the first section of the large-scale handbook Church Geography and Statistics appeared in two volumes, The European ecclesiastical provinces, and the first volume of the second section, The Non-European Church Provinces, America. For the second edition of the Wetzer and Welte's Lexicon - Church Lexicon or Encyclopedia of Catholic Theology and its Ancillary Sciences , published from 1892 to 1901, he was the most productive author with 232 articles. He mainly wrote historical-statistical articles on non-German and non-European church provinces. In 1895 he published his work Conspectus hierarchiae catholicae toto orbe terrarum. Ecclesiastical statistical tables over the whole Catholic world . His home diocese dedicated Neher's 50th anniversary, commemorative Statistical personal catalog of the Diocese of Rottenburg , which first appeared in 1878. Second and third editions of a more limited scope were published in 1884 and 1895.
