Anadara is a shell - genus from the family of ark shells (Arcidae).
features
The housings, which are equally or evenly different, are very bulbous, often almost on the same side, are large to medium-sized and have a rather rounded, oblique-egg-shaped, roughly square or roughly trapezoidal shape. The strong, forward-curved vertebrae sit almost in the middle of the housing in relation to the length, or are only slightly shifted to the front end, i.e. H. the rear part of the housing is only slightly extended. In the rear part of the housing there can be a keel running from the vertebra to the transition from the rear edge to the ventral edge. The lock plate is almost straight to only very slightly curved. It has numerous, short, vertical to slightly outwardly diverging, almost identical teeth. The ligament lies in front of and behind the vertebrae. They don't have a constantly gaping opening for the byssus .
The shell is very thick and the cases are quite heavy according to their size. The ornamentation consists of strong radial ribs. The ventral margin is correspondingly strongly notched. The periostracum flakes off easily.
Geographical distribution and habitat
The representatives of the genus Anadara live freely in soft soils or attached with byssus threads to shell fragments , stones, etc. in tropical and subtropical seas.
Taxonomy
The genus was established in 1847 by John Edward Gray . It is the type genus of the subfamily Anadarinae Reinhart, 1935, which, however, is used by only a few authors. MolluscaBase does not use the subfamily structure of the ark shells. The type species of the genus Anadara Gray, 1847 is Arca antiquata Linnaeus, 1758. The following species are currently included in the genus Anadara :
