Anton Schiestl (priest)

Anton Schiestl (born May 1, 1808 in Baden near Vienna ; † June 7, 1889 there ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and collector .

Life

The son of a master dyer studied at the Vienna seminary and in 1827 and 1828 at the University of Vienna . After his ordination he was a cooperator in Pernitz in Lower Austria and in Penzing near Vienna until 1836 . Until 1849 he was a cooperator in Margareten near Vienna in the parish of St. Josef . He became a curate beneficiary in the parish of St. Peter.

From 1883, when he retired, he was in Baden most of the time. For the golden jubilee of the priesthood he was made papal chamber of honor . He also became a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher and an honorary citizen in Baden.

Anton Schiestl was particularly important as a patron of art. In the course of the regotization of the parish church St. Stephan in Baden, he donated measuring instruments, a way of the cross , the choir stalls and numerous glass paintings. Much of it was lost in looting in 1945. Schiestl also owned an extensive collection of various objects, such as paintings, postcards and musical instruments.
