When Winterlin was born in the summer of 1805, the formerly Upper Austrian Breisgau still belonged to the short-lived Duchy of Modena-Breisgau - his birthplace Degerfelden was one of them and a few months after his birth came to the Electorate of Baden and finally to the newly formed Grand Duchy of Baden the following year . Winterlin came from a farming family. His parents, Michael Winterlin and his wife Luise (née Höfle) had three sons. The eldest died in childhood, the third, Augustin, emigrated to America. After his mother's death, his father and his second wife had two sons. The father worked at times as a clerk and local bailiff in Degerfelden.

Winterlin came to Basel in 1818 at the age of thirteen, where he learned the basics of painting from the painter Peter Dussing (Toussaint). He then began working as a draftsman in Peter Birmann's (Birmann and Huber) art dealers in Basel , “where he colored sheets with traditional costumes, historical subjects and Swiss landscapes in a factory.” The Swiss painter, graphic artist and lithographer Samuel Frey (artist) (1785 –1836) recognized Winterlin's talent and encouraged him to create pictures himself. In the twenties of the 19th century, this inspired the creation of lifelike drawings of landscapes and buildings in the area around Basel and later pictures of other parts of Switzerland - especially the Alps. On his travels he captured his objects almost photographically and then painted the sketches with watercolors . The drawings were then further elaborated by him on request and, in many cases, used by lithographers as a template for their work. Winterlin's works found their way into many middle-class households in the Basel area, but he never became famous and could hardly make a living from his work. In many cases, the lithographs did not indicate that they were based on a drawing by Winterlin.

From 1854 he lived permanently in Basel , where he led a withdrawn, quiet life; before that he had lived temporarily in Degerfelden. In 1881 Winterlin had to stop painting for health reasons and received a pension from the Basler Kunstverein . The association also bought the grave for him on the Wolfgottesacker in Basel's Kannenfeld. As a thank you for the support, Winterlin bequeathed eight sketchbooks to the art association. Today these sketchbooks are in the holdings of the Kupferstichkabinett Basel .

In Rheinfelden-Degerfelden a street is named after Anton Winterlin.

Winterlin mainly devoted himself to the representation of Swiss alpine landscapes in oil or gouache , which in comparison to contemporary realistic painting still corresponded very much to the romantic ideal of the transfigured landscape. Winterlin was also active as an architecture and vedute painter. The panorama pictures of Basel occupy a special place in his work , including two large-format longitudinal panoramas. His five panoramas show the city of Basel from different towers. Winterlin also captured the view from St. Chrischona and the Passwang in panoramas.
