Antoninus is a derivative of Antonius , the gentile name (family name) of the Antonians . It appeared in Roman as a cognom or agnom (epithet), namely with the adoptive emperors of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty since Antoninus Pius (born Titus Aurelius Fulvus, 86–161), and also with the dynasty of Severus (193–235) to Elagabal (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus the Younger, 204–222), and then became his first name.
