Antonio Alatorre

Antonio Alatorre Chávez (born July 25, 1922 in Autlán de la Grana , Jalisco , Mexico , † October 21, 2010 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican writer , philologist and translator .

Alatorre became known for his works after Spanish literature ; his famous book, Los 1001 años de la lengua española (The 1001 Years of the Spanish Language), which tries to explain the history of the Spanish language in a pleasant, simple and fairly short way, was published in 1979.

Life

Antonio Alatorre was born in Autlán de la Grana, Jalisco in 1922. Already in his youth he was intensively involved with languages ​​and learned Latin, Greek, French and English. After graduating from high school, he first studied law, but broke off this course and studied literature at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and philology at the Colegio de México (Colmex). From 1943 he taught languages. From 1953 to 1972 he was director of the Colegio de México and was editor of the Nueva Revista de Filología Hispánica. In 1998 he won the Mexican National Prize for Linguistics and Literature. He was a member of the Colegio Nacional and honorary member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua , wrote and translated numerous books. He died in Mexico City in 2010.
