Antonio García Quejido
Antonio García Quejido (born February 16, 1856 in Madrid , † July 13, 1927 there ) was a Spanish politician and trade unionist .
Life
García Quejido, a typographer by profession , made contact with the Marxist circle around Pablo Iglesias Posse early on in Madrid . From this group - known under the name Nueva Federación Madrileña - the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party ( Partido Socialista Obrero Español , PSOE) emerged on May 2, 1879 , one of whose leader García Quejido became. So he took part in several congresses of the Second International . In 1888 García Quejido was involved in the founding of the Union General de Trabajadores (UGT, General Workers' Association), to whose chairman (1888-1892) and general secretary (1894-1905) he was elected. In 1897 he was elected Secretary of the National Committee of the PSOE. In 1909 he was elected to the Madrid City Council as a socialist candidate. From 1912 he was editor of the daily newspaper El Socialista (The Socialist), the organ of the PSOE.
As the leader of the left wing of the PSOE, García Quejido welcomed the October Revolution in Russia and spoke out in favor of joining the PSOE to the Third International . After internal party struggles, García Quejido and others founded the Spanish Communist Workers Party ( Partido Comunista Obrero Español , PCOE) on April 13, 1921 , which in November of the same year merged with the Spanish Communist Party ( Partido Comunista Español ) , which was founded in 1920, to form the Communist Party of Spain ( Partido Comunista de España , PCE) united. From 1921 to 1925, García Quejido was the first general secretary of the latter.
In 1901 García Quejido published the first volume of Karl Marx's Capital . He founded the magazine La Nueva Era (The New Age) to spread Marxist thought in Spain.
