Medal around 1448

Antonio Marescotti (documented between 1444 and 1462 ) was an Italian medalist and possibly a sculptor .

Nothing is known about Marescotti's life. His name and his period of activity can only be deduced from his signed and dated medals. Above all, he is known for the “Portrait Medal of Antonio Pisano , which was generally assigned to him , exists in several variants and was formerly considered a self-portrait of Pisanello. The Pisanello Medal is not signed or dated and is likely to have been made sometime between 1440 and 1443 and is one of Marescotti's earliest works.

Even if his works differ stylistically from Pisanello's, he is definitely related to this in terms of image structure and invention, which makes training by himself or his circle seem possible. An apprenticeship as a sculptor cannot be ruled out, but this cannot currently be proven.

Marescotti was likely to have worked primarily in Ferrara . In addition to the medal portrait of Pisanello, he also modeled a medal for the Marquis / Marchese Borso d'Este as well as portraits of Galeazzo Maria Sforza , Ginevra Sforza and Giulio Cesare da Varano . In addition, he made a number of other medals without portraits, of which the motif of Saint Bernard of Siena was widely used.

Marescotti signed his works with “MARESCOTI FERRARIENSIS” and “ANTONIO MARESCOTO DA FERARA”, among others .

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC , USA owns 8 of the famous Marescotti medals.
