Giulio Cesare da Varano also called di Varano or de Varano (* 1430 ; † 1502 in Pergola ) was an Italian ruler, lord (duke) of Camerino and Condottiere .

Life

Giulio Cesare da Varano was the son of the Lord of Camerino, who nominally belonged to the Papal States. He succeeded his father Giovanni in 1444. He served the Popes as a general: first from 1469 Paul II and later Pope Sixtus IV. In 1482 he entered the service of the Kingdom of Aragon . In the disputes between the Popes and the Republic of Venice in the 1490s, he became General Commander of the Republic.

Cesare Borgia tried in 1502 to establish his own central Italian empire, which was made up of parts of the papal state of his father, Pope Alexander VI. and further conquests should exist. After capturing Camerino by betrayal in 1502, he had Giulio Cesare arrested with his three sons and brought to the Pergola fortress . There Giulio Cesare was murdered by Cesare Borgias Condottiere Michelotto Corella , who cut his throat.

Giulio Cesare's daughter Camilla Battista Varano was born on October 20, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized.
