The Antwerp Express class is a series of seven Panamax - Container motor ships of the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd . The units manufactured in 1999 and 2000 are among the fourth generation of container ships.

On June 27, 2013, Hapag-Lloyd put a new Antwerp Express into operation, which is one of the ten Neopanamax ships in the Hamburg Express class launched in 2012 .

description

The ship type of the Antwerp Express series was built by the South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries and was a further development of the previous Hapag-Lloyd classes with elements of the Ship of the Future project. They therefore have wheelhouses with optimized all-round visibility and free-fall lifeboats arranged at the stern . In terms of shipbuilding, the Panamax design, developed in collaboration with Germanischer Lloyd , is carried out without longitudinal panels , as is the case with comparable Hapag-Lloyd classes . The advantages of the design, which was new at the time, were the larger cargo space and the lower construction costs. The total capacity is almost 4900 TEU, there are 370 connections for refrigerated containers .

The ship's superstructures are arranged about four fifths of the length aft. The main motor used acts directly on a fixed pitch propeller and a shaft generator . The on-board energy is provided by three auxiliary diesels and one emergency diesel. The ships are equipped with a bow thruster to support the docking and casting off maneuvers .

The lead ship , the Antwerpen Express, was laid down on June 29, 1999, floated on October 16, 1999 and put into service on January 12, 2000. This was followed by three ships for Hapag-Lloyd and three other ships that were built for the Greek shipping company Costamare and are on long-term charter for Hapag-Lloyd. The last ship in the series, the New York Express , was delivered in December 2000. All ships of the class were used in liner service between Europe and East Asia.
