Since De Wever was barely 18 years old and was not allowed to take part in the elections in Belgium or in Europe in 2019 , she looked for alternative ways to make her concern about overcoming the climate crisis heard. Inspired by the work of Greta Thunberg in Sweden, De Wever organized a climate strike in Belgium , which tens of thousands of schoolchildren have joined every week since January 2019. De Weber's movement soon rose to become the most influential political movement in Belgium in the new millennium.

De Wever keeps talking to politicians. In February 2020, for example, she contradicted the statements made by the EU foreign affairs officer, Josep Borrell , who accused climate activists that they were not prepared to give up in order to achieve their goals. She replied: “Of course we are ready to pay the price so that we have a future.” In 2020, she also discussed the need for action in climate policy with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels.

Together with Luisa Neubauer , Greta Thunberg and Adélaïde Charlier , she was one of the four initiators of the Face the Climate call in summer 2020 , which campaigned for the establishment of a climate emergency in the European Union; Hundreds of thousands of climate scientists, activists, influencers and civil society participants, including Leonardo DiCaprio , Hans Joachim Schellnhuber , Naomi Klein , Stefan Rahmstorf , Annie Lennox , Joaquin Phoenix , Maja Göpel and Björk , signed the call in a very short time . The call started with the words: "Stop pretending we can solve the climate and environmental crisis without treating it as a crisis."

With the announcement by De Wevers and Adélaïde Charliers that they would do an internship with the group The Greens / European Free Alliance in the EU Parliament, they gave up their leadership roles at Youth for Climate in order not to damage the neutrality of the organization through their partisanship.
