Anutin Charnvirakul ( Thai อนุทิน ชาญ วีร กูล , RTGS Anuthin Chanwirakun ; born September 13, 1966 ) is a Thai entrepreneur and politician. He has been chairman of the Bhumjaithai party since 2012 . He has been Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister since July 2019.

life and career

Anutin is the son of the building contractor and politician Chaovarat Chanweerakul , who served as Interim Prime Minister of Thailand for two weeks in December 2008. He attended the Assumption School in Bangkok and completed an engineering degree at Hofstra University in New York State, which he graduated in 1989. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Thammasat University .

He then worked as an engineer in his father's company, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction (STECon). Anutin later took over as CEO of the company. Its members include nearly 5% of the shares Stecon and over 10% stake in the steel producer STP & I . The total value of its corporate holdings was estimated at over $ 77 million in April 2019.

Anutin began his political engagement in the Chart Pattana party , to which his father belonged. 1996-97 Anutin acted as an advisor to the then Foreign Minister Prachuab Chaiyasan . Like his father, he switched to the Thai-Rak-Thai Party (TRT) of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who had ruled from 2001 . Anutin became Deputy Minister of Health in his government in July 2004, but moved to the Ministry of Commerce as Deputy Minister three months later. From March 2005 until the military coup on September 19, 2006 he was again Deputy Minister of Health. As a result of the dissolution of the TRT after the coup, Anutin, like many other leading TRT members, was banned from all political offices for five years.

After the suspension ended, he took over the chairmanship of the Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) from his father in October 2012 . This was founded in 2008 by a group of former TRT members around Newin Chidchob . In the parliamentary election in March 2019 , Anutin ran as the top candidate of the BJT, which came in fifth place with 10.5% of the vote. During the election campaign, he expressly campaigned for the legalization of cannabis cultivation and consumption - not only for medical purposes, but also as a luxury food. In July 2019, he was appointed Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister under former junta leader Prayut Chan-o-cha .
