Recruitment Agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Tunisia

The recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Tunisian Republic was signed on October 7, 1965 ( Cabinet Erhard I ) and led to the start of Tunisian immigration to the Federal Republic , despite the contrary contractual arrangement (limitation of the duration of stay to a maximum of two years, so-called rotation principle ) Germany. The recruited workers were called guest workers in Germany .

The Federal Republic of Germany concluded similar recruitment agreements with other countries: Turkey , Greece , Italy , Yugoslavia , Morocco , Portugal and Spain .

In contrast to the recruitment agreements with Western countries, the recruitment agreement with Tunisia contained some special features from the start (which also applied to the agreements with Morocco and Turkey):

  • recruitment was only intended for unmarried people,
  • family reunification or family reunification was explicitly excluded in the agreement,
  • a health examination and an aptitude test for the job to be accepted,
  • an upper limit for the stay of 2 years has been set, an extension is excluded,
