Apšuciems is a Latvian town in the Engure district about 60 km northwest of Riga .

Culture and sights

Worth seeing is u. a. the school from 1912, which the municipality of Engure had to close some time ago due to a lack of students. The building, located right by the sea, was recently completely renovated and can now be rented for private events. Furthermore, the so-called artist's settlement (“Mākslinieku ciemats”) located in the forest of Apšuciems is worth seeing, which was built during the occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union. The settlement was founded “in honorem” Richard Wagner , who was Kapellmeister in Riga from 1837 to 1839, and is said to have frequented the picturesque beach of Apšuciems during the summer months. For this reason, the former district town of Tukums considered placing a monument to the famous composer in this settlement. The settlement, which is only partially inhabited today, served well-known Latvian composers and visual artists as a retreat for creative work during the occupation. There is also a small concert hall with an organ in the settlement, which attracts visitors to concerts in summer. The internationally known Latvian bass-baritone Egils Siliņš has already performed here. In addition, installations by visual artists from the Tukums region are carried out on the roof of the Apšuciems bus stop every year in the summer months. Also worth seeing are the wall paintings in the Hotel "Villa Anna", which were uncovered during construction work in 2005 and can now be viewed in the dining room.

Others

During the Second World War in 1942 and 1943, the school of Apšuciems (1941-44 also German Espenhof) was the headquarters of the German Wehrmacht in Latvia (Commander Lieutenant General Schloen ). This was relocated from Riga after disputes over competence with the Reichskommissariat Ostland .
