The Apastepeque volcanic field is located near the village of Apastepeque and north of the city of San Vicente in El Salvador and consists of two dozen volcanic craters , lava domes , cinder cones and maars .
Andesitic and Dazite lava domes were formed as a result of ash eruptions. Some of the basaltic eruptions that followed ended with the formation of steep-walled maars up to 100 meters deep. Some of them now form lakes, such as the Laguna de Apastepeque and the Laguna Chalchuapán .
