Ape ( German Hoppenhof , Estonian Hopa ) is a city in northern Latvia on the border with Estonia . In 2009 the city merged with four surrounding municipalities to form the administrative community Apes novads .
history
In 1420 the Hoppe family was enfeoffed with the area. A strong boom began at the end of the 19th century under the landowner Axel von Delwig. After 1903 there was a train station here on the Walk - Marienburg small train line (see: Gulbene – Alūksne railway ). In 1928 city rights were granted. After the Second World War , industry was settled. In 2016, 953 residents were registered in Ape.
