Apeiranthos also Apiranthos or Apirathos ( Greek Απέραθος also Απείρανθος or Απίραθος ( m. Sg. )) Is a mountain village on the Greek Cyclades -Insel Naxos .
Locality
Aperathos is located in the east of the island about 32 km from the city of Naxos on a hill in the middle of vineyards at an altitude of 650 m on Mount Fanari. Aperathos is the seat of the town of the same name ( Dimotiki Kinotita Aperathou ; Δημοτική Κοινότητα Απεράθου), which includes the towns of Azalas , Kanaki , Klido , Lygaridia , Moutsouna and Panermos with a total of 914 inhabitants (2011).
Due to partially identical linguistic and cultural conditions, it is assumed that the Cretans founded the place in the 10th century. The Italian navigator Cristoforo Bondelmonti gave the first written evidence of Aperathos in 1420.
In Aperathos the streets were laid out with Naxos marble and the masonry was made with it. There are two tower houses in the village. The place on Naxos is particularly important because high-quality emery is mined there.
In Aperathos is the church of Panagia Apeirathitissa, one of the oldest churches on the island; it contains historical icons.
Museums
There are three private museums in Aperathos. A geology museum shows a collection of around 200 exhibits ores, stones, minerals and fossils. The Archaeological Museum exhibits finds from the Stone and Bronze Ages. In the local history museum, regional mussels, corals, marine animals and bones can be viewed.
Land reform
In 1986 there was a grassroots model experiment in Aperathos when Manolis Glezos , a well-known resistance fighter against the German occupation in World War II , was elected chairman of the local council. A “consultative assembly” was set up, which curtailed the authority of the municipal council and took control of the municipal administration. This political model was abolished after years due to a lack of interest from the population. In the place itself, Glezos developed a concept for protection against floods, soil erosion and groundwater. A system of small dams leads surface water to a collecting basin.
