The Apollo Theater in Siegen is a show theater without a permanent ensemble that performs two to three in-house productions per season. The house offers a mixture of drama, concerts, dance performances and musical theater. The artistic director is Magnus Reitschuster . The new building replaces the dilapidated and technically inadequate stage in Siegen on Spandauer Straße. The city of Siegen, the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia invested around 17 million euros, supported by commercial and private donors.

Originally, the building on Jakob-Scheiner-Platz , which was built in 1935 according to plans by Ernst Huhn and was last used as a cinema, was only to be converted. In the planning phase, however, it was decided to demolish the existing building and build a completely new house in the same place. Only the historical facade was preserved and continues to shape the image of the site. The foundation stone was laid on November 15, 2005, the topping-out ceremony took place on September 1, 2006, and the first season started on August 31, 2007.

In the 2014/2015 season, the Apollo Theater had a record attendance of 104,243.

The opening season

Every Saturday between May and August 2007, over 6,000 citizens visited the new theater building to see the house. During these free public tours, the Apollo could be viewed from the orchestra pit to the Schnürboden , from the Z-bridge to the lighting control. Free theater tours will continue to be offered every first Monday of the month.

The first performance was reserved for children between the ages of six and twelve. On August 31, 2007, after being welcomed by the mayor of Siegen, over 500 children saw the premiere of Apollo's own production The Enchanted Brothers .

174 events took place in the first Apollo season, most of them guest performances. In addition, four in-house productions were staged together with the Apollo ensemble , consisting of guest actors and directors : The Enchanted Brothers , Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris , a homage to Adolf Busch and Kassandra based on the novel by Christa Wolf . As a coproduction with the Philharmonie Südwestfalen , the Musikbühne Mannheim and with the Viennese director and comedian Otto Schenk as actor, the Mozart one-act play Der Schauspieldirektor also celebrated its premiere in Siegen.
