Apolygus spinolae

Apolygus spinolae is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 5.1 to 6.0 millimeters long. The bugs of the genus Apolygus have a green base color and a fairly broad oval body. Their black spurs on the rails ( tibia ) do not arise from black points and the second part of the antennae is usually shorter than the pronotum is broad at the base. Apolygus spinolae can be distinguished from the similar Apolygus lucorum by the lighter ground color and the dark colored cuneus of the hemielytras at the extreme tip .

Occurrence and habitat

The kind is distributed in Europe without the extreme south and east to Siberia and through Central Asia to China and Japan. In Germany the species occurs almost everywhere and is mostly common, in Austria it occurs only sporadically.

As with Apolygus lucorum, it is mainly the herbaceous layer that is colonized in open to partially shaded, but microclimatically moist places.

Way of life

The bugs live mainly on the great nettle ( Urtica dioica ), but they can also be found on many other herbaceous plants from different families. They primarily suckle on the ovary and immature seeds. In some places it is considered a pest in wine and hop growing. Occasionally, you can see them suckling dead insects or conspecifics. The adult bugs can be seen from mid-June to August and September. Newly hatched adult bedbugs in September suggest that a second generation per year may appear in favorable locations. These bugs are said to be more likely to be found on woody plants.
