Apostolos Kontos ( Greek Απόστολος Κόντος ; born November 22, 1947 in Greece ) is a former Greek basketball player and coach.

Career

Kontos began his career at the Athens club Ionikos Neas Filadelfias. In 1969 he moved to Panathinaikos Athens , where he would play for the next 14 years and have his most successful period. Kontos rose to the position of team captain during this period and is now regarded as one of the most significant players in Panathinaikos history. In addition to winning nine championships, he was also able to win the Greek Club Cup three times. After Kontos was not used in the last cup win in 1983 over arch rivals Olympiacos Piraeus , he left the team in protest. When he then signed a contract with AEK Athens , he became the second oldest player to move within the Greek league at the age of 39 . In February 1987, Kontos ended his active career after 28 years as a professional.

National team

His debut with the Greek national team gave Kontos in a game against Turkey on December 25, 1968. In the following 14 years Kontos was an integral part of the Greek selection and took part in a total of two European Championships. He played his last game on May 30, 1982 in a game against Germany . Konto's greatest success with the national team was winning the silver medal at the U-18 European Championships in 1970 and the bronze medal at the Mediterranean Championships in Cairo in 1971 .

Coaching career

In the 1993/94 season he took over as a coach at AEK Athens for one year.
