The White Angel pharmacy is an important building in Viennese Art Nouveau by Oskar Laske . It is located in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City, at 9 Bognergasse .

Art Nouveau angel

The pharmacy “ ad angelum album ” (about the white angel) was first mentioned in 1587. The first owner was Sebastian Götz. The first location of the pharmacy was apparently on Lichtensteig.

In 1618 the pharmacy was moved to Färbergasse , also known as Unter den Spänglern. Balthasar Bartez was the owner of the pharmacy from 1625 to 1647, under him it was relocated to Bognergasse 2. In 1725 the Engel pharmacy moved to the Kohlmarkt .

Leopold Vollgruber was the owner from 1797 to 1823, and under him the move to Am Hof No. 6 took place.

In 1891 the pharmacy was transferred again, back to Bognergasse, this time at number 13. In 1901/02 the entire building in which the pharmacy was also located was torn down and replaced by an Art Nouveau building that still stands today. The new building and design of the pharmacy was carried out by Oskar Laske.

The street front of the pharmacy is adorned with marble and mosaics of two angels in Art Nouveau style, and is one of the few remaining pharmacies in Art Nouveau style and a popular photo opportunity for tourists.

There is a pharmacy of the same name in Salzburg on Linzer Gasse , where the poet Georg Trakl completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist.
