The Hofgeismar Pharmacy Museum is a pharmacy museum in Hofgeismar , Kassel district . It is located in the oldest building in the city after the church and shows 350 years of pharmacy history.

history

The building in which the museum is now housed was constructed from sandstone in 1239 . Initially it was intended as a town castle for defense purposes, but later used as a residential building and warehouse. The entrance area consists of around 3 meter high masonry rooms with sandstone walls and a beamed ceiling. At the behest of the Hessian Landgrave, the “Gesundberunnen Pharmacy” was opened in the building in 1768, with the aim of offering and accompanying spa treatments. The local pharmacist family opened the museum in 1989 with exhibits from the 18th century after the city's magistrate decided in 1978 to keep the building. The museum has been owned by the city of Hofgeismar since 2012.

The museum has five levels with a total of 400 square meters of exhibition space. In the groin vaulted cellar there is a medieval alchemist's kitchen with the laboratory equipment of a pharmacist of the time. On the upper floors there are original pharmacist's offices from the Hubertus pharmacy from 1945, the Brunnen pharmacy from 1768 and the Sandersche pharmacy from 1801, which was in operation until 1974, together with their original equipment such as pharmacist jars made of glass and porcelain and scales with weights . The 200 volume museum library is on the second floor. The books on chemistry , physics and botany have been preserved in full; the oldest tome is from 1582. In the not publicly loft certificates, prescriptions and treatment kits will be archived.

Adjacent to the house is a 250 square meter pharmacy garden with local medicinal plants .
