The Appenzeller Bahnen (AB) was a Swiss railway company headquartered in Herisau that operated a network of meter- gauge railways in the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden , Appenzell Ausserrhoden and St. Gallen .

history

Merger in 1988

The company has existed since 1886 as the successor to the Swiss Society for Local Railways , which changed its name to Appenzeller Bahn (AB) in 1985 . With the merger agreement of December 2, 1988, the Appenzeller Bahn and the St. Gallen-Gais-Appenzell-Altstätten-Bahn (SGA) merged retroactively to January 1, 1988, with the name of the first-mentioned railway being put in the plural .

The merger was preceded by a joint management from 1970, as a result of which more and more people were responsible for tasks in both companies and the cooperation was gradually strengthened. In this sense, the merger was above all a formal step. There have been vehicle deployments beyond company boundaries before, but limited by the cogwheel operation and the tight curve radii of the SGA.

Freight transport

From 1999, freight traffic was carried out on behalf of SBB Cargo . Over the years, however, the transport volume sank to 180 freight wagons or 4,400 t per year. Therefore, SBB Cargo stopped freight traffic at the end of 2003.

2006 merger

At the four general assemblies in 2006, the merger of the Appenzeller Bahnen, with retroactive effect from January 1, 2006, with the Rorschach-Heiden-Bergbahn (RHB), the Bergbahn Rheineck-Walzenhausen (RhW) and the Trogenerbahn (TB) became the "new" Appenzeller Bahnen decided. From a legal point of view, it was a takeover of the other companies by the Appenzeller Bahnen.

Appenzell Bibliobahn

The Appenzeller Bibliobahn was a specialty : between 1988 and 2008, a railway wagon that had been converted into a library ran on the rail network of the Appenzeller Bahnen, which also covered the annual shunting costs.
