The Apple Pro Display XDR (official name: Pro Display XDR ; XDR for E X treme D ynamic R ange) is a computer monitor developed by Apple , which will be shown for the first time on June 3, 2019 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) together with the Mac Pro The third generation was introduced and launched on December 10, 2019. It is the official successor to the Apple Thunderbolt Display, which was discontinued in 2016 .

overview

The Apple Pro display XDR includes a 32 -inch large farbkalibriertes 6K retina - LCD display with a resolution of 6016 × 3384 pixels in 16: 9 aspect ratio (this one corresponds to pixel density of 218 or 219 ppi) and has a suggested retail price (MSRP ) of 4999 US dollars or 5499 euros. It has a typical contrast ratio of 1,000,000: 1 as well as a continuous maximum brightness of 1,000 nits and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits. The refresh rate is 60 Hz and the color depth is 10 bits. The display has 526 blue LEDs as backlighting and can be provided with a nano-texture for an additional charge of 1000 US dollars or 1000 euros to prevent rainbow artifacts and reflections that can occur with matt displays. According to Apple, this nanotexture is etched into the glass at the nanometer level. The design of the display is similar to that of the third generation Mac Pro. Fans are used to cool the system; according to the manufacturer, they should be no more than 7 dB loud. Apple relies on its own time controller for the image calculations and local dimming. Thanks to Apple's own light-shaping technology, the display is said to have almost OLED- like black values despite liquid crystal technology .

During the presentation, Apple exhibited the monitor in a demonstration alongside reference monitors for US $ 25,000 and US $ 35,000, with visitors to the demonstration confirming that the Apple Pro Display XDR is on a par with the much more expensive reference monitors.

It is compatible with all Macintosh computers that are compatible with Thunderbolt 3 , but only the third generation Mac Pro and the fifth generation MacBook Pro can display full 6K resolution; older Macintosh models with a Thunderbolt 3 connection are limited to a maximum resolution of 5120 × 2880 pixels.

reception

Shortly after the presentation, it was criticized that a stand is not included in the scope of delivery of the Apple Pro Display XDR, but has to be purchased separately at an MSRP of 999 US dollars or 1099 euros. The monitor itself was also seen as overpriced by some viewers of the presentation.

The animated film studio Lunar Animation used the Pro Display XDR in the production of the animated closing sequence of the film Jumanji: The Next Level and judged that the display had a high level of image accuracy and was cheap compared to other professional monitors.
