The Aquatis Aquarium-Vivarium Lausanne in the Science Park Biopôle north of the Swiss city of Lausanne is the largest freshwater - show aquarium - vivarium in Europe. It was opened on October 21, 2017 and houses around 10,000 fish, 100 reptiles and amphibians and 300 plant species on an accessible area of 3,500 square meters. On a circular route over two floors, supported by digital technology and lifelike projections, 20 ecosystems from five continents are presented in the 46 aquariums, terrariums and vivariums. The entire lower floor is dedicated to Europe. A plexiglass corridor leads under the central large aquarium that extends over both floors.

Aquatis cooperates with various scientific and nature conservation institutions and is funded by several foundations.

Project history

The first conception of the Aquatis was developed in the late 2000s by the French biologists Morgane Labous Simunic and Frédéric Pitaval together with the Swiss museologist Michel Etter (founder of the Swiss Game Museum ) under the project name Aquaécopôle . The concept was inspired, among other things, by the Biodôme de Montréal, which opened in 1992 . In 2005 they were awarded the contract in a competition organized by the city. Started as a joint venture between the Aquarium of La Rochelle (France) and the Science Museum of Barcelona (Spain), the BOAS Groupe (a group of construction and real estate companies, hotels and thermal baths founded and led by Bernard Rossi) joined the project in 2009 as the main investor. The realization was delayed several times, among other things by two objections of a local resident that reached the federal court. Because the decision was made in 2013 to integrate some of the animals from the 1970 founded but bankrupt Vivarium de Lausanne in the nearby Sauvabelin district in order to increase its attractiveness, the original concept was completely revised. The foundation stone was laid in 2015, and the entire project was now called Aquatis - Cité de l'eau douce (Aquatis - the city of fresh water).

construction

The building owner BOAS constructions SA from Crissier commissioned the construction company Grisoni & Zaugg SA from Vuadens as general contractor . The planner was the Lausanne architects Richter Dahl Rocha & Associés, the landscape architectural design was done by Emch + Berger from Bern. The Créatime agency designed the scenography for Aquatis by Frédéric Ravatin. The construction costs of the project amounted to around 100 million francs (63 million were originally budgeted), two thirds of which went to the aquarium-vivarium and a third to the remaining parts of the facility. The facade of the circular main building consists of around 100,000 movable anodized aluminum plates, which should give the impression of scales of a fish skin or reflections of a water surface moved by the wind. The building complex and overall concept of the Aquatis include the fast-service restaurant and shop as well as the Aquatis Hotel & Conference Center, which opened on March 20, 2015, as well as a Park & Ride built by public-private partnership with connection to the M2 Vennes metro station and the exit , located below the building complex Vennes the A 9 .

business

The operator of the facility is the BOAS Groupe. To promote environmental education and education in sustainable development, the non-profit Aquatis Foundation was established in 2007, which supports the scientific and cultural offer. The director of Aquatis is Angélique Vallée-Sygut, former project manager of the Ocean Museum in Monaco .
