The Arabian pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus arabicus ) is a bat in the smooth-nosed family . The species belongs to the subgenus Hypsugo within the pipistrelle bat ( Pipistrellus ), which is recognized by some zoologists as an independent genus.

features

Two specimens examined in the 1980s had a total length of 66 and 69 mm, respectively, a forearm length of about 29 mm, a 34 mm long tail, almost 6 mm long hind feet and about 9 mm long ears. The long thumbs, which can be up to 4.8 mm long with a claw, are striking. Further deviations from other generic members in the same distribution area exist in the structure of the dentition. The fur is mostly dark brown to black in color, although there are also light brown, reddish brown or gray individuals.

Distribution and way of life

The Arabian pipistrelle lives in eastern Oman and on the opposite side of the Gulf of Oman in Iran . This bat begins its excursions earlier than other bats in the region. It occurs in deserts and semi-deserts and visits periodic rivers and water points to hunt insects.

status

There is a lack of information on the size and development of the population. The IUCN lists the Arabian pipistrelle with "insufficient data available" (data deficient).
