General
The animals of this genus are rather small, their head body length is around 40 to 60 millimeters. Their head is characterized by their short, wide snout and ears, which are also short. The color of the thick fur varies from sand-colored to dark brown.
These bats are common in Eurasia , Africa, and North America . They live in a wide variety of habitats, from deserts to rainforests. They prefer crevices in houses, caves or hollow tree trunks as sleeping places. They are considered to be agile fliers who prey on their food, mainly insects, primarily in flight.

In 2019, Rainer Hutterer , Jan Decher, Ara Monadjem and Jonas Astrin established the closely related genus Parahypsugo from Africa. Parahypsugo happoldorum was identified as a type species and described as a new species. The iron Traut's pipistrelle (formerly hypsugo eisentrauti ) and the West African short head bat (formerly hypsugo crassulus ) were also placed in the new genus. Parahypsugo bellieri (formerly Pipistrellus eisentrauti bellieri ) was raised to species status.
