Ara Monadjem (born December 19, 1968 in Innsbruck , Austria ) is a zoologist from Swaziland . His research focus is on small African mammals .

Life

Monadjem is the son of Siamak Monadjem and his wife Farideh, née Seddigh. In 1991 he received his Bachelor of Science with distinction and in 1993 his Master of Science from Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg , South Africa . From 1995 he studied zoology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal , where he in 1997 with a dissertation An Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Supplementary Food and Ground Cover on Small Mammal Population Dynamics and Community Structure in a Swaziland Grassland for Ph.D. received his doctorate. From January 1999 to January 2006 he was a lecturer at the University of Swaziland . From April 2006 to April 2011 he was Associate Professor in the Biological Department of the University of Swaziland. Since May 2010 he has been a research assistant at the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria . Since April 2012 he has been a professor at the University of Swaziland.

Monadjem's interests include the ecology and conservation of mammals and birds in Africa. His work focuses primarily on small African mammals (especially bats and rodents ) and large birds ( vultures , eagles and storks ). He conducts field studies, the primary aim of which is to collect information on rare and endangered species and to enable precise identification of these species. He is also involved in predictive distribution models and studies of population dynamics . Monadjem traveled to several African countries for his research work, including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Mozambique, Swaziland, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa and Angola.

In 2012, Monadjem was one of the first to describe the four bat species Rhinolophus smithersi , Rhinolophus mossambicus , Rhinolophus cohenae and Rhinolophus mabuensis . In 2013 he was involved in several articles belonging to the Nesomyidae and Muridae families in Kingdon's Mammals of Africa . In the same year he was one of the first to describe the bat species Neoromicia roseveari from the Nimbabergen in Liberia . In 2015 he published the book Rodents of Sub-Saharan Africa: A biogeographic and taxonomic synthesis together with Christiane Denys , Peter J. Taylor and Fenton PD Cotterill . In the same year he described the bat species Neoromicia isabella from Guinea together with Jan Decher, Anke Hoffmann, Juliane Schaer, Ryan W. Norris, Blaise Kadjo, Jonas Astrin and Rainer Hutterer . In 2017 he and Steven M. Goodman wrote the chapter on the Nesomyidae family in the seventh volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World . In 2018 he was responsible for the chapter on the otter shrews in volume eight of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World and he was involved in the first description of the bat species Rhinolophus gorongosae from Mozambique. In 2019 Monadjem was involved in the chapters on the round nose and the slit nose in the ninth volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World .

Cycling

In August 2014 Monadjem took part in the road race of cyclists in the XX. Commonwealth Games for Swaziland in Glasgow . However, he did not achieve the goal.
