Arabo ( Armenian Արաբօ ; * 1863 as Ստեփանօս Մխիթարեան Stepanos Mchitarjan in Kurter near Bitlis , Vilâyet Bitlis , Ottoman Empire ; † 1893 between Hınıs and Muş ), also known as Arakel , was an Armenian freedom fighter of the late 19th century and one of the first fedajin ; he helped defend native Armenians against the troops of the Ottoman state.

Life

Arabo studied at the Arakeloz monastery school in Musch . Since the late 1880s he led Armenian fedayin units from Sasun and Taron against the suppression of the Armenians in the Six Vilayets by Sultan Abdülhamid II. In 1892 he was arrested by the Turkish authorities and sentenced to 15 years in prison, but he succeeded to escape from prison and continue his activities as Fedai .

Arabo was killed in a battle against Kurdish gangs ( eşkiya ) on the way from Chnus to Muş in 1893 .
