Arabsat 4A was a television satellite owned by the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (ARABSAT) based in Riyadh . It belonged to the fourth generation of the ARABSAT satellite fleet.

The satellite was on 28 February 2006 with a carrier rocket of the type Proton-M from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan launched into space. However, due to a malfunction of the upper stage of the Proton missile, Arabsat 4A did not reach its intended orbit. Since the satellite could not have fulfilled its tasks due to this error, the Arab Satellite Communications Organization decided to let it burn up in the earth's atmosphere. On March 24, 2006 at 00:20 UTC , the satellite's engine was fired to slow it down, whereupon the satellite plunged into the earth's atmosphere and burned up at around 02:07 UTC.

The Arabsat 4A built by EADS Astrium weighed 3,341 kg at the start and was designed for an operating time of 15 years. Alcatel Alenia provided the payload .

In addition to the transmission of TV and radio programs, multimedia and Internet services should also be offered via Arabsat 4A .
