Arago is an impact crater in the western part of the Mare Tranquillitatis . It lies northeast of the Manners crater and west of the Lamont crater covered by the mare . The crater couple Ritter and Sabine can be seen in the southwest .

The rim of the crater has a bulge on the west side. In its interior a central ridge runs to the north flank. The surrounding surface of the mare is marked by chains of hills, especially on the east and south-east side.

To the north rises a large lava dome called Arago Alpha (α). A second dome of comparable size is located at the same distance on the west side. This is called Arago Beta (β).
