Aram Ziai

Aram Ziai (born October 9, 1972 in Würselen ) is a German political scientist and Heisenberg professor of the German Research Foundation for Development Policy and Postcolonial Studies at the University of Kassel . In 2011, Südwind magazine described him as one of the “leading researchers on post-development approaches”.

Life

Aram Ziai studied sociology from 1993 to 1999 in Aachen and Dublin with the minor subjects history and English . In Hamburg doctorate he in 2003 in political science and was in Kassel in 2006 in political science habilitation . He has been a Heisenberg Professor at the University of Kassel since 2014; previously he taught visiting professorships a. a. at the University of Vienna and the University of Ghana in Accra .

Research, teaching and commitment

Ziai's research focuses on development theory and policy, post-colonial studies and post-development approaches, and global economic governance. In his research he pursues discourse analysis and dispositive analysis approaches. With this methodological background, Ziai examines the structure and dynamics of German and international development policy discourses. His work is devoted to the analysis of Western development theories and development policy institutions as well as a deconstruction and reconstruction of the underlying concept of 'development' and 'underdevelopment'.

In his work on global economic governance, Ziai primarily deals with the role of the World Bank and its internal auditing ( inspection panel ), especially since the crisis of the Washington Consensus .

Aram Ziai taught and researched at the universities of Aachen, Hamburg, Magdeburg, Kassel, Amsterdam (UvA), Vienna (IE), Bonn (ZEF) and Accra (Legon).

Ziai is the spokesman for the Development Theory and Development Policy section of the German Political Science Association (DVPW) and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Center for Development and Decent Work (ICDD). He works as an editor in the magazine Peripherie and publishes the series "Development Policy and Development Theory".
