TEE Arbalète 1957

The Arbalète , sometimes with the French article L'Arbalète , was a long-distance train operated jointly by the SBB and the SNCF , which connected the Gare de l'Est in Paris with Zurich main station from 1957 to 1997 . The train belonged to the TEE network and continued to operate as InterCity and later as EuroCity after it was closed . The name Arbalète is the French name for crossbow and should be reminiscent of the weapon used by William Tell .

history

With the introduction of the Trans-Europ-Express network, the first Arbalète ran on June 2, 1957. Like all TEE trains, the Arbalète only ran 1st class and was mainly geared towards business travelers. In the first few years, the train ran on a four-part diesel multiple unit from the SNCF X 2770 series . These vehicles were RGP 1 multiple units derived from the X 2720 series, with only one class of car and painted in the TEE colors red / cream. The RAm TEE diesel multiple units were used from August 1964 to September 1969, followed by locomotive-hauled trains with INOX-TEE wagons of the type Mistral 69. These trains were operated in France with diesel locomotives of the CC 72000 series and in Switzerland with SBB Re 4/4 II Covered in TEE coloring.

From May 23, 1971, the Arbalète between Zurich and Basel were also given the TEE Helvetia carriages , and the trains ran separately in the opposite direction.

On May 26, 1979, the last Arbalète ran as a TEE train. After that, a composition of Corail cars was used with both car classes. The train operated as InterCity until 1987 , then as EuroCity until it was discontinued in 1997 . The connection was replaced by a pair of TGV trains that ran via Bern and Pontarlier and used the high-speed route from Dijon . It was replaced in 2007 by today's TGV connection via Basel - Strasbourg .

Train run

The train ran from Paris Gare de l'Est via Chaumont , Belfort and Mulhouse to Basel . He traveled from Paris to Mulhouse on the Paris – Mulhouse line and from there the Strasbourg – Basel line .
