Arbeid Adelt! was a Belgian band from the 1980s and early 1990s. The group became known for their combination of electronic music , new wave and sometimes absurd lyrics.

history

The formation was founded in 1981 by the singer and keyboardist Marcel Vanthilt (pseudonym: Max Alexander) and the saxophonist and keyboardist Jan Van Roelen (David Salomon). The first single Ik Sta Scherp was released in the same year . With the title De dag dat het zonlicht ... from the single of the same name from the following year and an appearance in a television program, they became known in the Flemish part of the country. The band changed the original song title De dag dat de dokter geen pillen meer voorschreef (The day on which the doctor no longer prescribes pills) to De dag dat het zonlicht niet meer scheen (The day on which the sunlight no longer seems) - because Jan Van Roelen did not like the title. This led to a copyright conflict with the Flemish pop singer John Terra , who had recorded a song with the same name and was attacked by a line of text. The band then changed the title again.

1983 was an eventful one for Arbeid Adelt !. First the guitarist Luc Van Acker joined the band, then the first album called Jonge Helden was released and shortly thereafter another one called Le Chagrin En Quatre-Vingts was released . Associated single releases followed. But already in 1984 Van Acker left the band again, Geen Ekskuzes Meer appeared without his participation. With Willy Lambregt as Willy-Willy on guitar and Dani Klein on microphone, the singles Wittekomhie and Décoiffé followed in 1985 . But even this line-up should not last, the band broke up shortly afterwards due to internal differences and dissatisfaction with their record company.

Marcel Vanthilt oriented himself towards television and was a video jockey for the newly founded music channel MTV Europe from 1987 to 1990 . There he moderated together with Ray Cokes Cokes and Vanthilt .

But already in 1991 they found themselves together again with the line-up of Vanthilt, Van Roelen and Van Acker, landed a record deal with the major label Virgin and released another album called Des Duivels Oorkussen . Three single releases follow, including Johnniie Sexpistool . However, financial success did not materialize and so Vanthilt turned back to his television career. In 1994 Jan Van Roelen released an album called Noblësse Oblige with various other musicians under the same name as the band , after which the band fell silent.

On August 2, 2007, a reunion concert by Arbeid Adelt! Took place in the By The Sea Theater in Ostend . instead of. The occasion was Marcel Vanthilt's fiftieth birthday. The band played another concert on Sinner's Day on October 31, 2010. On April 22, 2011 the band's first live album, Live @ from 2011, will be released . Almost exactly two years later Fm Bxl Ep , a split EP with the Belgian band Bene Gesserit. In December 2013 the band played as the headliner at BIMFest 2013.

In retrospect, the band is best known as a transit station for some of the musicians who played in it. Luc Van Acker , who worked as a studio musician for Jo Lemaire , Red Zebra and other artists in the early 1980s and who left the band in 1984, founded the post-industrial project Revolting Cocks the following year with Al Jourgensen from the band Ministry . After the brief reunification in 1991/92, he established himself as a musician in the electronic field and as a label manager and producer. Dani Klein and Willy Lambregt founded the successful pop band Vaya Con Dios together with Dirk Schoufs in 1986 .
