Willy Lambregt , stage name Willy Willy , (* 1959 in Ostend ; † February 13, 2019 ) was a Belgian guitarist . He became known as a founding member of the pop formation Vaya Con Dios .
biography
Willy Lambregt was already very interested in rock music during his school days . In 1973 he dropped out of school with the desire to start a career as a rock star. In order to keep himself afloat financially, he worked in various jobs - including as a worker in a meat factory . He later performed the New York Dolls and the British punk wave in the late 1970s as important musical influences - especially the Sex Pistols and The Clash . Lambregt spent his military service in Germany in 1978 - a time which, according to his own account, strongly consolidated his aversions to authorities.
Following the advice of a friend, rock photographer Danny Willems, he moved to Brussels in 1983 . Since the new wave / electronic formation Arbeid Adelt! When the guitarist's seat was currently available, Lambregt joined the group, where he met the singer Dani Klein . With Dani Klein and Dirk Schoufs , Lambregt founded the pop group Vaya Con Dios , with which he recorded the internationally successful single hit Just a Friend of Mine .
Since Lambregt shuttled back and forth between Vaya Con Dios and the punk band The Scabs , he decided to give preference to rock'n'roll instead of money and commerce . He left Vaya Con Dios soon after it was founded to finally join the Scabs. After internal disputes, however, the Scabs replaced him in 1994 by another guitarist. From 1994 to 1999 he played as a musician in various formations. Under his stage name Willy Willy Lambregt founded his own band in 1999 with the name Willy Willy & The Voodoo Band. In 2003 the group released their first CD and supported well-known rock and blues acts such as George Thorogood , Canned Heat , Bill Wyman and Dr. John . In 2005 the group released their second album.
The new backing band put together at the end of the 2000s traded under the name Willy Willy & Lafayette. Lambregt also worked with the Belgian drummer and singer Isolde Lasoen . Result: The title Why Don't you love me, published in 2010 on the compilation De Gek 4!?. In November 2010 he conducted an interview with the Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards for the Belgian TV channel VTM .
He died of cancer diagnosed in summer 2018.
